This course will equip participants with the necessary skills to remain effectively "lost-proof" in nearly any wilderness setting. Participants will learn to interpret maps to tell stories about a variety of landscapes, as well as using a compass as a tool to stay oriented and find their way. With Danny Frank as our guide, we'll have a morning classroom session to learn and practice skills, followed by an afternoon of orienteering in the field. Get ready for a fast-paced, fun and adventuresome day in the foothills of the Wallowa Mountains.

In this one-day primer, local photographer & biologist, Kendrick Moholt, will share his deep knowledge of the history, geology & ecology of Wallowa County. In this jam-packed day, we'll begin in the Wallowa Mountains, exploring the top of Mt. Howard, spend the afternoon on the Zumwalt Prairie, then end the day at Buckhorn Overlook, peering down into the depths of Hells Canyon. This will be an energetic class for the deeply curious at heart; perfect for those who want to see more when they wander.

Then, we'll learn a simple distillation process to transform our plant matter into perfume. Participants will leave with a portrait of our day in a bottle and a greater understanding of fragrance as an expression of place.

Prairie Mountain Folk School has partnered with Cabin Love to offer this 8-day course on how to build a 16x20 Japanese style timber frame cabin. Instructor Tom Bonamici will lead you from layout, through cutting joinery, to raising your frame. You'll learn the skills to build your own little place in the woods and take home a set of Prairie Mountain (and Cabin Love) approved cabin plans. This one’s simple, without all the frills, just like a cabin should be. Want to take the cabin home? At the end of your 8 day course, students will have the chance to buy the frame you built together. Please note that no experience with woodworking or tools is necessary.
