Carving spoons from green wood is a practical art requiring just basic tools; it's easily practiced at the kitchen table or in the woods. The class emphasizes developing the skills to work safely and precisely with hatchet and knives, from chopping branches into spoon blanks, to all the blade work necessary to finish and decorate items such as butter knives/spreaders and/or spoons. The skills you learn will apply directly to all kinds of wood work, from sculpture to furniture and timber-framing; they also apply to all kinds of woodworking tools, electric or hand-operated.

Topics include:
Safety, safety, safety Properties of wood (species, grain, harvest, seasoning, etc.) Effective grips and techniques Body mechanics: poster, power, self-care, etc. Sharpening, tool selection and maintenance finishes and care of wooden wares.

$65 + $10 materials fee

A signed waiver is required for participation in all classes at Prairie Mountain Folk School. Minors must have an adult guardian sign a waiver on their behalf. Your instructor will provide a waiver form to sign at the beginning of your class.
